Description
Roses have been used for hundreds of years in beauty and healing for their herbal fragrance and nourishing properties. Drying roses for different uses dates back to historic times. The Egyptians relied on flowers, including dry ones to make perfumes and cosmetics. They used perfumes during religious and royal ceremonies. Flowers are still dried to preserve for multiple uses.

Scientific Name of Red Rose:
There are two species that the red roses from Pakistan belong to, namely, Rosa gallica and Rosa chinensis. The latter is more popularly used in South Korea for their aromatic herbs requirement to use in tea and cosmetic applications as per the HS codes and terms used in international custom tariffs.

Production of Dried Rose:
Red Roses are native to Interior Sindh (southern province of Pakistan); roses grow throughout the year except for the temperature is below 10 degree centigrade. It is known that rose stems are cut into smaller size for plants to survive the harsh winters. Rose plant is fed by lake waters, streaming from foothills of Himalayas Mountains through lakes and waterfalls merging into Sindh from Northern Pakistan, more particularly, Punjab and Kashmir.

Fragrance of Roses – Route to Export:
The distinct natural fragrance is a reflection of sticky and nutritional soil with gust of Arabian Sea winds. Whilst harvesting is done each day in sunny climate season, except for yearend winters. It is then gathered and brought to junction points like Hyderabad city which has direct routes to urban population such as Karachi, and access to sea and airports.

There are different regional yields in Pakistan per farmland, usually 2500 Kgs – 2800 Kgs on per hectares bases and there are hundreds of farmlands in Sindh province of Pakistan.

Perennial plant usually harvested throughout the year whilst spring and summer are the best times in terms of blossom full.

How Roses are Dried
There are a few methods of drying. Spreading the rose flowers under the sky for natural drying process is the most popular one. The roses are not exposed to scorching sun as that turns the petals darker in color losing its natural color and flavor.

Drying Process of Petals:

● Once matured, the flowers are manually hoed and collected under sheds in different lots in accordance with their color/appearance and harvest time.
● Rose petals are naturally dried under the sun (temperature ranges between 28°C - 37°C) in lot sizes of 2500 ~ 3500 KGs in an open field spread over 5 Acres (20,446 SQM) approx.

Difference between Rose Water and Rose Hydrosol:


The main difference between rose water and rose hydrosol is that rose water prepared using rose essential oil however rose hydrosol is a more concentrated version that carries the remains of essential oil after steam distillation process of roses.

Both rose water and rose hydrosol carry rose essence. They have many cosmetic benefits. These two words are often used interchangeably; there is a distinct difference between the two.
